Gum disease is one of the most common oral health conditions, yet it is also one of the most preventable. At Dr. Dimovski Dental, we believe that prevention is the key to maintaining a healthy smile for life. Understanding how gum disease develops and what you can do to stop it early can protect not only your teeth, but your overall health as well.
Gum disease, also known as periodontal disease, is an infection of the tissues that support your teeth. It typically begins with plaque buildup along the gumline. If plaque is not removed through daily brushing and flossing, it hardens into tartar, which can only be removed professionally.
There are two main stages:
Gingivitis
The early stage. Gums may appear red, swollen, or bleed easily when brushing or flossing. At this stage, damage is reversible.
Periodontitis
The advanced stage. The gums pull away from the teeth, forming pockets that collect bacteria. Over time, this can lead to bone loss, loose teeth, and even tooth loss.
Gum disease does not just affect your mouth. Research has linked advanced periodontal disease to other health conditions, including heart disease, diabetes, and respiratory issues. Preventing gum disease helps protect both your smile and your overall well-being.
1. Brush Properly Twice a Day
Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste. Brush for at least two minutes, making sure to clean along the gumline where plaque builds up most easily.
2. Floss Daily
Flossing removes plaque and food particles from between teeth and under the gumline, areas your toothbrush cannot reach.
3. Schedule Regular Dental Cleanings
Professional cleanings remove hardened tartar and allow us to detect early signs of gum disease before they become serious. Routine visits are one of the most effective ways to prevent long-term damage.
4. Avoid Smoking
Smoking significantly increases your risk of gum disease and can make treatment less effective.
5. Maintain a Healthy Diet
A balanced diet supports your immune system and helps your body fight infection. Limiting sugary snacks and drinks reduces plaque buildup.
Bleeding gums
Persistent bad breath
Red or swollen gums
Gum recession
Loose teeth
If you notice any of these symptoms, it is important to schedule an appointment as soon as possible. Early treatment can prevent more extensive procedures later.
At Dr. Dimovski Dental, our goal is to help patients stay ahead of gum disease through education, preventive care, and personalized treatment plans. Regular checkups and cleanings allow us to monitor your gum health and address concerns early.
Healthy gums are the foundation of a healthy smile. If it has been a while since your last dental visit, we are here to help you get back on track.
Book your appointment today and protect your smile for years to come.
